Southland Credit Union is proud to sponsor the EVERFI Financial Literacy Bee, taking place April 1-15, 2021. The EVERFI Financial Literacy Bee is a nationwide financial literacy challenge for high school students.
As families across the country are struggling financially in the wake of the pandemic, from unemployment to career shifts to a reduction in income, the EVERFI Financial Literacy Bee provides an opportunity for students to learn the critical importance of saving and budgeting for short-term and long-term financial goals.
The virtual challenge, created by social impact education innovator EVERFI, and supported by leading financial institutions nationwide, features four short digital lessons followed by a capstone essay contest in which students share a short-term or long-term savings goal and outline their plan to achieve that goal. Winners of the EVERFI Financial Literacy Bee will receive a total of up to $20,000 in college scholarships.
As an additional benefit for our local communities, Southland is offering a $1,000 scholarship to students in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. That’s right – in addition to the three national prizes up for grabs, Southland Members and local students have the opportunity to enter to win a Southland-exclusive scholarship prize of $1,000.
- First Place: $10,000
- Second Place: $6,000
- Third Place: $4,000
- Southland-exclusive prize for local students: $1,000
All prizes are awarded in the form of a 529 Savings Plan Gift Card. Please review the contest rules and terms before entering. In order to be eligible to win Southland's local student prize, please opt-in to receive communications from Southland when prompted.

The Financial Literacy Bee is designed for high school students in grades 9-12 and will be available through April 15, 2021. In this 30-minute course, you’ll explore short interactive lessons to help you better understand how to save, set financial goals, budget, and invest in your future. After completing the course, you will have the opportunity to submit a short essay sharing a financial goal of yours and outlining the steps you plan to take to accomplish that goal based on what you’ve just learned. The scholarship essay contest is open to all students ages 13-18.
