Go green and save green

Adding sustainability into your lifestyle doesn’t have to be costly. In fact, reducing, reusing, and recycling can both help the environment and your wallet.

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, Southland has come up with a few ways that you can save some green by going green.

Minimize your spending

Cut back on any unnecessary purchases this month. Not only will your bank account thank you, you’ll reduce waste with from product packaging, shipping boxes, and plastic bags.

If you have been doing a lot of online shopping, help yourself cut back by removing your saved credit card information from your favorite sites and unsubscribing from retail newsletters.

Go paperless

Opt-in to eStatements at your financial institution. Oftentimes, your financial institution will offer a bonus or the removal of a monthly fee. Southland Credit Union offers eStatements through our eBranch online banking. To sign up, simply log into eBranch and click on "Account Management" located on the navigation bar. Then select "eStatements Opt-In/Opt-Out." An e-mail notification will then be sent to confirm your enrollment.

Reduce your energy usage

One of the easiest ways to help the environment while saving money is to turn off the lights. Turn off any lights in your home when you’re not using them, but also keep an eye out for things that make be secretly using energy when they are turned off or in idle. Some examples of this include chargers that are left plugged in when not being used, toaster ovens, coffee makers, hair dryers, and computers.

In the effort to reduce energy in the long-term, next time you’re in the market for a new appliance, look for energy-efficient models that can help your conversation levels. Not only will they limit emissions, they will reduce your power bill.

Help the environment while saving money this St. Patrick’s Day, and every day!
