Protect the credit union difference

March 26, 2025 | 3 min

As President/CEO of Southland Credit Union, I want to thank you for being part of a financial institution that puts people—not profits—first. For decades, credit unions like Southland have existed to serve Members by offering lower fees, better rates and essential services to underserved communities.

Unlike banks, credit unions are not-for-profit, Member-owned cooperatives. This structure allows us to return value directly to you, our Members, instead of shareholders. A key part of what enables us to do this is our federal tax-exempt status—a benefit designed to recognize the unique role credit unions play in the financial landscape.

Unfortunately, there are renewed discussions in Congress about potentially taxing credit unions. If passed, these proposals could reduce the benefits we’re able to offer you and threaten the very foundation of the credit union model.

We need your voice.
Now is the time to remind lawmakers that taxing credit unions is not in the best interest of their constituents. It takes just a few seconds to send a pre-written message to your representatives through Connect for the Cause by the California Credit Union League.

Take Action Now

Together, we can ensure that Southland—and credit unions across the country—can continue to serve Members like you with integrity, fairness and community-first values.

Thank you for your support and for being an essential part of the Southland family.

With gratitude,

Tom Lent
