Credit unions were established with the foundation of, “People Helping People.” Over our 85-year history, Southland Credit Union has adopted this philosophy as a guiding principle for giving back to our local communities. As a not-for-profit, we value the communities we serve and are proud to support events that mean the most to local residents. Highlighted below are just some of organizations that Southland supports regularly.
COVID-19 First Responder Meals
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Southland has donated close to $20,000, or 2,400 meals, to the nurses, doctors, policemen, and security guards serving our Los Angeles and Orange County communities. For more details on how Southland is giving back during the pandemic, read our blog here.
Following the merger with Harbor Credit Union in January 2017, Southland has agreed to make four donations of $25,000 to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center over the course of four years, totaling $100,000. The funds are intended to benefit the wellness of employees and patients in key areas of the medical center.
Southland is a recurring sponsor for many Los Alamitos recreational activities like Race on the Base, various donation drives, Los Alamitos Chamber, Los Alamitos Education Foundation Gala, Rossmoor Community Festival, and Serve Los Al.
As the official sponsor of Long Beach State Athletics, Southland is present at many athletics games with free resources and materials. In addition, we support student-lead organizations like the Daily 49er, Dig Magazine and the journalism department.
Southland has sponsored and participated in events such as Seal Beach Cleanup Day, Public Safety Awards Sponsor, Seal Beach National Night Out, and Run Seal Beach.
Run by our very own Southland Associate Shannon Stewart, Helping Hands Giving Hope organizes food drives for Thanksgiving, toy drives for Christmas, school supply drives for the back-to-school season, and Blessing Bags for the homeless which contain water, a snack, a pair of socks, tooth paste, a toothbrush, hand sanitizer and lip balm.
Southland has participated in multiple projects and fundraisers to support CHOC such as Project Go Kart, which raised $14,000 to provide video recreation for kids confined to their hospital beds, CHOC Walk in the Park and various other fundraising events.
Southland has supported events such as Santa Monica PAL’s Annual Charity Golf Classic, Santa Monica Buy Local Health and Fitness Festival, Santa Monica Summer SOULstice, Police Activities League Charity Golf Classic.
SCU Gives Back
In 2018, Southland launched the campaign, SCU Gives Back, to offer Members the opportunity to nominate local non-profits for Southland to support. Southland gave $500 to the three nominated organizations over the year including: Best Buddies Walk, an organization that creates opportunities for people living with intellectual and development disabilities; Casa Youth Shelter in Los Alamitos which provides 24/7 shelter care for youth ages 12-17; and Friends of Rossmoor Elementary for Rossmoor Elementary, which supports the kids, teachers, staff and volunteers there.
